Of historical, social, scientific, and architectural significance, the large industrial complex of old Kinnears Ropeworks is highly representative of early twentieth-century construction. An architectural masterpiece with an industrial look and feel, distinctive exposed red brick walls, and visible steel girders where the possibilities are endless. Live City’s design will preserve and strategically work around Kinnears Ropeworks personality and unique features to provide a one-of-a-kind new urban precinct.
George Kinnears & Sons established in Footscray on Ballarat Road in 1902. Throughout its 100-year history the Kinnears factory manufactured rope, yarn, twine, canvas, carpet, linen, cordage, jute and flax. In October 2002, the Kinnears site was nominated to the Victorian Heritage Register by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). Today the site exists as a large industrial complex of early 1900’s buildings. The buildings reflect the industrial processes of the site and include a number of manufacturing and storage buildings.
